Parental leave policy

Objective

Provide information and guidance to all employees of their rights and obligations with regards to Parental Leave entitlements. The policy is to aim to provide employees and Manager/Supervisors with information about parental leave and the procedure to follow when accessing this employee entitlement. 

Definitions

Parental Leave:

  • Unpaid leave taken by the employee associated with:
    • The birth of a child to the employee, the employee’s spouse or the employee’s de facto partner.
    • The placement of a child under 16 with the employee for adoption.
  • An initial period of unpaid leave for up to 12 months
  • Employees who meet the eligibility requirements have an automatic entitlement to this leave.
  • For extended Parental leave (additional up to 12month), employees must request this leave and approval is subject to agreement by Strathfield Sports.

Paid Parental Leave Scheme (Parental Leave Pay) – up until 01 July 2023:

  • The Paid Parental Leave Scheme is funded by the Australian Government and provides Parental Leave Pay to mothers and other primary care givers, including adoptive parents, who have been in the paid workforce and who have a baby or adopt a child on or after 1 January 2011.
  • The scheme provides for a maximum of 18 weeks’ pay at the national minimum wage. 

Dad and Partner pay – up until 01 July 2023:

  • Up to two weeks of government funded pay based on the rate of the National Minimum Wage when an eligible employee is on unpaid leave from work or not working.

Paid Parental Leave Scheme (Parental Leave Pay) – from 01 July 2023:

  • Parental Leave Pay for child born or adopted from 1 July 2023 based on national minimum wage
  • Up to 20 weeks (100 payable days) of Parental Leave Pay available
  • If partner, part of Parental Leave Pay reserved for them, max 90 days for one parent
  • Single parent eligible for full 100 days of Parental Leave Pay
  • Option to share Parental Leave Pay with another parent

Responsibilities

Employees
  • Employees must give a minimum of four weeks’ notice to the Club before proceeding on approved unpaid parental leave. The notice should confirm when the parental leave shall commence and when it shall finish.
  • Provide documentation necessary to General Manager in accordance to this Policy.
  • Co-operate with the General Manager to plan for the period of leave and arrangements when returning.
  • Mothers requesting for extended Parental Leave must give a minimum of four weeks’ notice before the end of the original leave return date.
General Manager 
  • Provide employees with information about their entitlements with regards to Parental Leave.

Consult with employees to plan for the period of leave and arrangements when they return.

Procedures

Employees who apply for parental leave must:

  1. Employees wishing to take any type of leave must complete the Leave Application Form via Deputy.
  2. Provide a minimum of four week notice so that staffing can be arranged.
  3. Submit the completed Leave Request form to the General Manager
  4. Retain a copy of the form for own records.
  5. Await notification from General Manager about details of the parental leave. General Manager will process all leave in a timely matter.
  6. Employees are obligated to check the internal mail for any extra information sent by General Manager.

Employees who require more information about Parental Leave should contact the General Manager.

Breach of Policy

The Club has an obligation to consistently apply and enforce this policy. Likewise, employees must comply with this policy. 

Employees who fail to apply for leave in accordance with the above procedures are considered to have breached this policy. Any employee who breaches this policy shall be subject to counselling and/or disciplinary action, which may include termination of employment.
